South West land team bolstered by real estate partner hire in Bristol

Shakespeare Martineau has appointed David Smithen as partner in its Bristol-based land team, reinforcing its strategic expansion across the South West. With over 30 years’ experience in residential development, commercial real estate and strategic land, David joins from TLT and brings a career spanning roles at Eversheds, Pinsent Masons, Arthur Andersen and Gateley.

David is a recognised figure in the development sector, advising national and regional developers, landowners and investors on high-value transactions. ‘The firm’s energy and drive really stood out to me… I saw an exciting opportunity to help grow its presence in the South West,’ he said. His recent work includes a £10 million land sale in South Gloucestershire and a 90-acre mixed-use scheme in Exeter.

In his new role, David will focus on expanding the firm’s client base across residential and commercial development, supporting Shakespeare Martineau’s broader growth in the region. His expertise also includes advising on financing facilities and forward-funded regeneration projects, such as a major NHS health hub in Weston-Super-Mare.

Victoria Tester, partner and managing director, commented: ‘David’s track record and depth of experience in the development market makes him an excellent addition to our team… We’re thrilled to welcome him to the firm.’ His appointment adds further depth to the firm’s specialist residential development offering and aligns with its continued investment in sector-focused growth.
