Thomson Hayton Winkley—Suzie Fisher

Cumbria firm appoints long-serving lawyer as new managing director

Cumbria law firm Thomson Hayton Winkley has appointed Suzie Fisher as its new managing director. Fisher, who began her career with the practice as an office junior in 1986, has risen through the ranks to lead the firm, which has offices in Kendal, Windermere, Kirkby Lonsdale and Crooklands. She succeeds Fiona Ward in the role.

Fisher qualified as a chartered legal executive and became head of the dispute resolution department before being appointed as a director in 2023. Reflecting on her career progression, she said: ‘Having spent my entire career with the firm, I’m extremely proud to have been appointed to the managing director role. It’s an exciting time to take up the position.’

Thomson Hayton Winkley, together with its specialist branch The Rural Law Practice, was acquired in 2023 by MAPD Group, which supports the growth of regional firms through acquisition. Commenting on Fisher’s appointment, MAPD co-founder Joanna Kingston-Davies said: ‘Suzie’s appointment is a testament to her unwavering commitment to both the firm and the local community. She has deep roots in the area and a genuine passion for supporting clients and local businesses.’

Under Fisher’s leadership, the firm is planning further recruitment across its agriculture, dispute resolution, family and private client teams, building on recent hires across its property and private client departments. Fisher added: ‘We have an experienced and capable team whose dedication and commitment to providing the highest standards of service to our clients is driving increased demand across the practice. I look forward to building on our tradition, values and standing in the community to further the strategic growth and development of the practice with the support of the wider MAPD team.’
