Train judges in costs

Master Gordon-Saker’s call for judges to be given more training in costs budgeting, in his inaugural speech as Senior Costs Judge, has struck a chord among litigators.

Adrian Palmer, managing partner at Proven Legal Technologies, said: “We have been struck by the number of times where we have put significant effort into an estimate for standard disclosure only to be met by a pure guess by our opponents in the form of a figure to the nearest £10,000. This then fails to prompt a question or mention at the first case management conference as to how the figure was calculated.”
