Prisons are struggling to cope with a larger proportion of older inmates with poor health and the impact of COVID-19, MPs have warned
Two Justice Committee reports published this week, ‘The ageing prison population’ and ‘Coronavirus: the impact on prisons’, highlight problems within the prison estate.

More than 5,000 prisoners (about 6% of the total) are older than 60, and 85% of them have a major illness. Policies of using single occupancy cells where possible and separating vulnerable prisoners and new arrivals appear to have prevented a mass outbreak of COVID-19.
