BIS proposing to ban certain zero-hour contracts
Certain types of zero-hours contracts (a contact under which no minimum hours of work or pay are offered to the individual) could be banned, under Department of Business, Innovation and Skills proposals. A consultation launched this week looks at the use of exclusivity clauses, which prevent individuals working for others even if no work is available under the zero-hours contract, as well as transparency issues. Business Secretary Vince Cable is considering introducing a code of practice, creating new guidance and publishing model clauses.
Jean Lovett, employment partner at Linklaters, says: “A greater certainty over the status and rights of individuals working under zero hours contracts is to be welcomed.”
The consultation, Zero hours employment contracts, closes on 13 March 2014.
