Art at Chancery Lane to celebrate bicentennial

A suite of three art works by Turner Prize winner Helen Cammock has been unveiled at Chancery Lane to mark the 200th anniversary of the Law Society

The commissioned work, Ode to justice, A balanced scale, and A people’s practice (pictured), invites reflection on the oath solicitors take, the emotional terrain they navigate and the ethical balance they strive to uphold. The pieces comprise text in stainless steel lettering, a banner and abstract line drawings etched into wood.

Cammock, whose father’s work as a lay magistrate helped inform the piece, said: ‘The work focuses on both a call to action and an acknowledgement of the weight carried by solicitors working to ensure equality before the law.’

Law Society president Mark Evans said: ‘This artwork reminds us that law is not just about rules, it is, above all, about people. It is about care, respect and the courage to stand up for what is right, even when the system is imperfect.’
