Offshore disputes firm promotes partner

Independent specialist offshore litigation and dispute resolution firm, Baker & Partners, has recently announced the promotion of senior associate James Sheedy to the firm’s partnership, effective immediately.

James is a senior litigator. He has a particular expertise in the most complex trust disputes though his practice embraces contentious commercial and company law matters. He is the author of Litigating Trust Disputes in Jersey: Law, Procedure & Remedies, the first practitioner text dedicated exclusively to trust litigation. He is called to the bars of both England and Wales and Jersey.

James joined the Baker & Partners team in 2014. In 2019, he was ranked as a Notable Practitioner in the Chambers & Partners OfIfshore Dispute Resolution Guide. He has been recognised as a ‘Rising Star’ in Legal 500 for the last three years. In 2021 he was shortlisted for CityWealth’s IFC Senior Associate Lawyer of the Year and has twice won eprivateclient's Channel Islands Top 35 Under 35.

He is a member of the Association of Contentious Trust & Estate Practitioners (ACTAPS), the Contentious Trust Association (ConTrA) and the Chancery Bar Association, and is a member of the Trust Law Working Committee of Jersey Finance that considers reforms to the Jersey’s Trusts Law.

Speaking of his promotion, James said: 'Since joining Baker & Partners in 2014, I have thoroughly enjoyed working as part of this top-class team which dedicates itself to delivering outstanding results for our clients. The firm continues to go from strength to strength, and remains at the forefront of the most complex multi-jurisdictional disputes. I am extremely pleased to join the partnership at such an exciting time of growth and momentum for the firm.'

Stephen Baker, Senior Partner at Baker & Partners, commented: 'It is with great pleasure that we welcome James to the partnership. Since joining the team eight years ago, he has played an integral part in some of our most complex cases, cultivating an enviable personal reputation particularly for complex trust work in Jersey. His drive and dedication to his clients made the decision to promote him to partner very straightforward.'
