CM Murray—Merrill April

Experienced employment expert comes on board as partner

Specialist partnership and employment firm CM Murray LLP has strengthened its senior executive and employer practice with the appointment of Merrill April as partner.

Merrill joins after almost 19 years at Memery Crystal LLP, where she served as partner and head of employment. She has a wide-ranging employment practice which covers both contentious and non-contentious matters, with particular expertise advising employers and senior executives on workplace disputes, high-value severance negotiations, and managing exits. She also has extensive experience in handling whistleblowing, HR structures and data protection.

Clare Murray, founder and managing partner of CM Murray, commented: ‘We are absolutely delighted that Merrill is joining our partnership. Merrill has a rare combination of extensive and robust High Court experience, including issues arising over restrictive covenants and bonus litigation, expertise in handling boardroom issues for AIM listed companies, and also having a specialist knowledge in non-contentious transactional issues too.

‘Merrill’s experience at the sharp end of contentious litigation, particularly acting for senior executives and employers in complex and high-profile disputes perfectly complements the international expertise of our practice and partners—a perfect strategic fit for our firm.’

Merrill added: ‘CM Murray’s reputation as a specialist partnership and employment law firm in the legal market is unrivalled and I am excited to join the partnership. I have watched with admiration as CM Murray has gone from strength to strength over the last decade to become a leader in its field. I now look forward to growing my practice at CM Murray, working alongside distinguished colleagues who are dedicated employment and partnership law experts with a truly international outlook.’

Timing is everything—and the Court of Appeal has delivered clarity on when proceedings are ‘brought’. In his latest 'Civil way' column for NLJ, Stephen Gold explains that a claim is issued for limitation purposes when the claim form is delivered to the court, even if fees are underpaid
The traditional ‘single, intensive day’ of financial dispute resolution (FDR) may be due for a rethink. Writing in NLJ this week, Rachel Frost-Smith and Lauren Guiler of Birketts propose a ‘split FDR’ model, separating judicial evaluation from negotiation
