Solicitor Joe Egan, who practises in Bolton, has been inaugurated as the 173rd president of the Law Society of England and Wales.
He succeeds outgoing president Robert Bourns. Christina Blacklaws becomes vice president of the Law Society and Simon Davis becomes deputy vice president.
Egan’s priorities for office are: maintaining continuity within the Law Society and the support it offers to solicitors; promoting the solicitor profession at home and aboard, including the development of a Local Law Society manual; leading the Global Legal Centre campaign, promoting the legal profession and jurisdiction as the leading centre for legal services; promoting access to justice; and advancing social mobility in the solicitor profession.
Egan said: ‘I look forward to the task of continuing to promote the outstanding work that solicitors do throughout England and Wales.
‘Every single day solicitors oil the wheels of justice and business in our country, and we have much to be proud of. The Law Society has an important role to play in this, representing the views of the solicitor profession to government, and providing a huge range of support to help solicitors get on with their job.
‘We also have a vital public interest role. Most, if not all of us, came into the profession to ensure that people could exercise their rights, and I intend to continue to stand up tirelessly for access to justice.’
