Firm announces Guernsey dispute resolution partner promotion

Ogier has announced the promotion of advocate Bryan de Verneuil-Smith to partner in its top-tier Guernsey team.

Bryan, who joined the firm in January 2019, has a wide practice including trusts, insolvency, investment fund disputes and property disputes.

The Legal 500 says that Bryan ‘is quick, commercial, and a pleasure to work with. His litigation experience and judgment further solidifies Ogier’s position among the top of the Guernsey firms for litigation’.

Mathew Newman, who heads Ogier’s Guernsey disputes team, said: ‘Bryan has an excellent litigator’s intuition and substantial experience in large-scale commercial litigation matters. We are very pleased that he has joined the partnership.’

Bryan added: ‘I am delighted to join Ogier’s leading multi-jurisdictional restructuring and corporate recovery team as a new partner. This group is particularly relevant in light of the economic fallout from COVID-19, which is likely to lead to many organisations considering refinancing and restructuring options for their businesses. A large increase in formal insolvency work and consequential disputes is also expected over the near term and I look forward to assisting our restructuring and corporate recovery team in advising clients on these matters.

‘Being based in Guernsey, the recent modernisation of Guernsey’s insolvency legislation, which has enhanced the island’s reputation as an insolvency jurisdiction, is also likely to assist in making it a more desirable forum for future insolvency proceedings.’
