Firm promotes senior associate to partner
Specialist IP law firm Powell Gilbert LLP has announced the promotion of Tom Oliver to its partnership, increasing the total number of partners at the firm to eleven.

Tom joined Powell Gilbert in 2010 as an associate before being promoted to the position of senior associate in 2015. During his time at the firm, he has represented clients in the English courts—the Patents Court, Court of Appeal and Intellectual Property Enterprise Court—and has also gained extensive experience in devising multi-jurisdictional patent litigation strategies with legal teams across Europe and North America.

Tom has advised clients on patent disputes spanning a wide range of sectors and technologies, including pharmaceuticals and medical devices, wind turbines, computer programming, smart phones and FRAND licensing. In addition to his patent litigation work, Tom advises across the full spectrum of IP rights, including trade mark oppositions and infringement proceedings, confidential information, copyright and passing off as well as assisting clients in relation to parallel trade strategies. He has also been involved in judicial review proceedings regarding the domestic implementation of a decision of the European Patent Office.

Dr Penny Gilbert, partner at Powell Gilbert LLP, commented: ‘Tom has proven himself to be an excellent IP litigator and adviser, drawing on his technical expertise and a wealth of legal experience to provide a first-class and highly valued service for clients. Tom will be a great asset to the partnership.

‘His experience in key areas of concern for our clients such as telecoms, tech and pharmaceuticals as well as his work on a wide range of IP rights is invaluable, especially as the demand for a holistic and strategic approach to IP continues to grow.’

Tom Oliver, partner at Powell Gilbert, added: ‘It’s a privilege to be joining the Powell Gilbert partnership. As a team we’re continuously striving to provide work and expertise of the highest standard possible to our clients and I look forward to continuing this work in the coming years.’
