Employment law expert joins commercial firm

Employment lawyer Simon Gilmour has joined SGH Martineau from Shakespeares, where he headed the employment team for many years. Described as "top class" by clients, appreciative of his pragmatism and "dedication to helping", Gilmour is strong on contentious employment issues and regularly advocates at employment tribunals.

Gilmour has significant tribunal experience, acting for a number of the country’s largest organisations covering claims for unfair and wrongful dismissal, protective awards and discrimination on the grounds of sex, race and disability. He has advised on employment issues relating to large-scale redundancies and complex corporate restructuring projects, with a growing reputation for helping clients understand employment ‘best practice’ through his bespoke training sessions.

Commenting on the appointment, partner and head of employment at SGH Martineau Jane Byford says: “Simon is a great addition to our team. A natural synergy exists between his experience in the education and retail & leisure sectors, which both remain key sectors for our new strategic approach. Although a well-known lawyer in the Midlands, it is his national profile, built on working with some large and prestigious organisations that we hope to exploit when attracting new clients with the quality of our offering.”

SGH Martineau senior partner, Andrew Whitehead says: “Simon is another of the important high-calibre appointments we have made recently and I’m confident more will follow this year. The strategic review we undertook at the end of 2013 is helping to redefine our offering and shape our growth for the next five years.”
