Head of Swiss practice appointed as next chair

Global firm Withers has announced the appointment of Justine Markovitz as its next chairperson, with her first term set to begin on 1 July 2019.

Having joined the firm in 1999, Justine became a partner in 2004, and since 2005 has headed the firm’s Swiss practice from its Geneva office. Specialising in tax, trusts and estates matters, she also previously acted as co-head of the firm’s global private client and tax team. Justine takes over the role of chairperson from New York-based Ivan Sacks, who is stepping down after serving the maximum of two terms. Justine is the firm’s second female partner to be appointed to the position, after Diana Parker’s tenure as chair from 1997 to 2006; working alongside chief executive Margaret Robertson, Justine will serve as part of a fully female senior leadership team.

Margaret Robertson commented: ‘Justine is a great fit for chairperson as she is universally respected, an exceptionally strong lawyer and has occupied a number of international leadership roles for many years. It speaks volumes of our partners' confidence in Justine that the vote for her appointment was entirely uncontested. I very much look forward to working with her on managing the continuing success of the firm and the excellence of the services we provide to our clients.’

Justine added: ‘I am thrilled to have been appointed chairperson and excited to continue Withers' position as the leading adviser to private capital around the world. It's a great honour to have been elected to build on Ivan's achievements and to take the firm’s success story forward.’
